Ex-Materia Prima drummer Ernesto Padilla formed Niño Planeta in 2000. Named after an imaginary superhero who plans to save the world, Niño Planeta debuted with the release of a self-titled album released by VozFutura Records in February 2001 in Puerto Rico and the US.
